Bercy Chen Studio LLP is a progressive design build firm based in Austin Texas and founded by partners Thomas Bercy and Calvin Chen, both graduates of the University of Texas at Austin with professional degrees in Architecture. Thomas also graduated with a degree in Structural Engineering. Thomas is from Belgium and Calvin is from Taiwan by way of Australia .

Thomas Tornbjerg Lessel joined Bercy Chen Studio as a project architect in May 2005. Mr. Lessel received his Masters of Architecture from the University of Texas at Austin in 2005. He also earned his degree in Architectural Engineering from The University of Texas at Austin in 1998. Prior to entering the Graduate School of Architecture, Mr. Lessel worked four and a half years as a structural engineer . Originally from Denmark , Tom further adds to the international disposition of the office.

Ryan Michael joined the office in August 2005 after moving to Austin from Raleigh , NC . Ryan received a Bachelor of Environmental Design in Architecture at the North Carolina State University School of Design in 2002.

 

  

The design work ranges from residential to mixed use commercial projects. As a members of the City of Austin Green Building Program with certified 3 star projects, Bercy Chen Studio strives to work with clients to create designs which are environmentally sustainable and aesthetically pleasing.

The varied backgrounds of the office forms a design philosophy of unique perspectives. The work is greatly influenced by vernacular precedents from various cultures, whether Islamic, Indian, or African in origin, while maintaining respect for particular contemporary contextual conditions.

Due to this unique approach, the work has received national and international attention. Bercy Chen Studio was recently selected as a participant in the Architectural League of New York's 2006 Emerging Voices lecture series. The firm has been published in various design journals including Dwell magazine, the leading San Francisco based publication on creative modern design - this publication culminated in a special television episode on the Fine Living Television Network program discussing Bercy Chen Studio's design approach in depth. The episode was aired in December 2004.
